A small device. Many possibilities. Raspberry Pi.
A bunch of things you will need:
- Raspberry Pi(If you have the kit, then it would be more convenient)
- Monitor (You know, a tv….)
- Wifi adaptor, usually found in the kit(or you can just use an ethernet in its place)
- Charger (the charger for samsung and android will work)
- SD card
- Concentration, passion and excitement
Start by plugging in the charger, the HDMI (connecting to the tv and this awesome device), mouse, and keyboard. Okay, before you start I need to explain something. If you have an ethernet then you can plug it in with the rest of the others but if you have the WIFI adaptor and this is your first time to use raspberry pi then you need to put it later. Also, for the SD card which is provided with the kit, will also have to be formatted. So, if this is your first time I suggest you read this first on how to set – up first —> https://www.raspberrypi.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/quick-start-guide-v1.1.pdf.
Connecting to the Internet
Attention to all readers: If you just plugged in your ethernet to your raspberry pi, then you may skip this.
On to the action part, once your raspberry screen is set up and your raspberry pi computer screen is there, open your terminal or command line. Once the terminal has loaded, and put this code –> sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces. Once a screen like the picture on the left shows, you’ll need change the last two lines replacing them with you internet username and password. Also a tip, when you’re moving around your mouse won’t work so use your cursor keys to move around. Okay, when you’re done putting all the information needed in this page, press ctrl X. This command will then show a dramatic all caps message saying “Save modified buffer (ANSWERING “NO” WILL DESTROY CHANGES) ?”, when I read this for the first time the word destroy blew up in mind head a few times, it’s okay, just CALM DOWN and type ‘Y’, this is telling the command “YES! I WANT TO SAVE THIS FILE!!!“. And, once you typed in you big ‘Y’, you’ll get a second message asking you what name you want to save the file to, just save it to the same name, no changes. Almost done! WOOO HOOOO!!!! Next step, the hardest part, just kidding. All you need to do is to shut down you raspberry pi, and remember I told you at the start not to plug in that WIFI adaptor well now is the time. That satisfying feeling when you plug your wifi to your raspberry pi. YASSS!!!! Now your all set, turn your raspberry pi up again and wait for your results. Guys, please, drink some water. Calm down. I tried quite a few time, and I’ve fail. Anyways, you are doing your:
After moments of waiting, your raspberry pi screen opens. Ahhhh. That faint light of the tv. Maybe you’ve been up all night filling your cups of coffee and now you wrapped up in your blanket staring at your screen in the middle of the night hoping for success, this is my reality, but you should be delighted of your success, you’ve finally connected to the internet, time to sleep. Okay, back to work! Check if you are actually connected to the internet and give yourself a tap on the back. Just so you know, there are many ways to connect to the internet through the command line and if this doesn’t work my suggestion to you is to boil some more hot water, make hot chocolate and do some more research:
Here are a few link to check in case these steps don’t work:
I’ll bare with you.
Connecting USB for movies and stuff…
All you need to do is plug your USB, wait a few second for a question to appear asking about if you want to open a file showing the content of the USB then you just click yes. You’ll be able to play the film that you want by downloading the omx player or vlc player doing the following steps:
- Open the terminal
- Type apt-get install omxplayer or apt-get install vlc
- Wait for download to be done and play you film
Unfortunately, I’ve encountered quite a few problems getting the sounds to work with the movie. But, I will find a solution quickly and update you all!! Hope you enjoy your ‘smart tv’ all made by yourself! You did all the programming, adding the internet and playing and allowing the movie to work. Comment down below on what you think and if there are simpler ways, also, if you have the solution to fix the sound problem.
